Janice Scherba was born in New York, but at 6, moved to the Bay Area where she has made her home. Janice received a Catholic education at Saint Gregory’s in San Mateo, Mercy High School in Burlingame, Santa Clara University, and got her credential at Notre Dame de Namur University in Belmont. After teaching a year in the public school, Janice began teaching at Our Lady of Mount Carmel School. She taught 1st Grade for 5 years before moving to the 2nd Grade. In all, Janice has dedicated 38 years to the children of Mount Carmel and considers the entire parish community part of her family.
While teaching, Janice was married at Mount Carmel Church and raised her 3 children, all Mount Carmel School graduates. Janice continuously attends classes and webinars to grow professionally and spiritually, and she has served on many important committees, most recently on the 2019 WCEA/WASC Accreditation Leadership Team, which lead Mount Carmel School through a very successful evaluation process receiving the highest honors a WCEA/WASC school can receive. Janice is trained by Slingerland Institute for Literacy, a certified Catechist, and a promised Pauline Cooperator. Janice has mentored teachers throughout the decades and continues this tradition of leadership, community building, and paying forward by mentoring new teachers as they begin their careers in education at OLMC. In addition to Janice’s commitment to teaching, she enjoys yoga, hiking, being outside in nature, reading with her book club group, and spending time with her friends and family.
Janice looks forward to co-teaching 1st and 2nd Grades – the two grade levels she knows and loves – along with her good friends whom she admires as strong educators, Ms. Carlisle the 1st Grade Homeroom Teacher and Ms. Hussey, the 2nd Grade Homeroom Teacher.
Janice also is excited to spend time providing the individual and small group support needed to ensure that all students achieve to the best of their ability. OLMC is blessed to have Mrs. Scherba continue her dedicated teaching with the children of Mount Carmel!
